Ibiza may be the headline act of the Balearic Islands, but there’s more to this island chain than parties and overpriced cocktails. Just under nine miles away, Formentera offers a softer contrast. Often accessed by a quick 30-minute ferry from Ibiza, this smaller, quieter island is drawing a more discerning crowd – those looking for laid-back luxury, natural beauty, and a slower pace of life.

It’s here, between the white sands of Migjorn and the clear waters of Es Caló, that Dunas de Formentera finds its place.
١. The history of Dunas de Formentara
Dunas de Formentera is the island’s first luxury resort focused on regeneration and relaxation. Just a short walk from the beach and surrounded by wild sand dunes, the 44-room hotel is designed for guests who want to unwind in nature, barefoot and carefree.
It’s the sister property to the well-known Gecko Hotel & Beach Club and part of the Marugal hotel group, led by Pablo Carrington, whose portfolio includes unique stays across Spain, France, Portugal, and Switzerland. Designed by Palma-based studio Antonio Obrador, the hotel blends calm, chic interiors with the natural beauty of Formentera’s west coast.
٢. Dunas de Formentera‘s artistic expression
The design at Dunas de Formentera isn’t just stylish – it’s a form of artistic expression that quietly tells the story of the island. Created by Palma-based studio Antonio Obrador, the 45 rooms and suites use natural textures, soft colours, and handcrafted details to create a space that feels calm, thoughtful, and connected to its surroundings. The materials – like polished concrete, teak wood, and woven raffia—aren’t just beautiful, they’re chosen with care, like an artist selecting the right palette. Art here is never loud; it lives in the details, from sculptural lighting to abstract prints and handmade ceramics that echo the movement of the dunes and the sea.
In the Casas del Mar and many other such rooms here, this artistic vision continues with open, sun-filled spaces that invite nature indoors. Every room feels like a quiet gallery, where simplicity and craftsmanship come together to create something deeply personal. It’s a place where design becomes a creative language – one that speaks softly, but leaves a lasting impression.
٣. Culinary experiences
Dining at Dunas de Formentera is all about fresh flavours, seaside views, and Mediterranean cooking at its best. At Caliu, the hotel’s laid-back restaurant on Migjorn Beach, meals are slow and soulful – think seasonal dishes cooked over an open fire, bursting with colour and taste. The menu celebrates the roots of Mediterranean cuisine, using local ingredients and traditional recipes that feel comforting yet new.
From fresh fish grilled to perfection and wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas to signature cocktails enjoyed under the sun, every bite reflects the island’s relaxed rhythm. It’s simple, delicious food made with care, right by the sea.
٤. Best time to visit
The best time to visit Dunas de Formentera is in June or early September, when the island is full of life but still peaceful. The weather is warm, the sea is perfect for swimming, and the atmosphere is calm and breezy. It’s the ideal moment to enjoy fresh Mediterranean meals at Caliu, walk barefoot along Migjorn Beach, and truly slow down. Only reachable by boat, Formentera has a relaxed, timeless charm.
