Atlal from Galbi is a fashion brand that proudly celebrates Algerian culture and heritage. Founded in 2020 by designer Lilia Yasmin, the name is inspired by Raï music and Umm Kulthum’s timeless songs, reflecting the deep cultural roots behind the designs. With experience at top fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga, Yasmin combines her love for Algerian traditions with a modern style. The brand’s motto, “Designed by the Roots,” shows its commitment to blending authentic culture with everyday fashion.
KHAMSA spoke with Lilia Yasmin to learn more about her and the story of Atlal from Galbi.
١. What inspired you to name your fashion label ‘Atlal from Galbi’ and how does the name reflect your vision for the brand?
The name Atlal from Galbi is deeply personal and poetic. Atlal comes from the song of the Diva Umm Khaltoum “el atlal” and means “ruins” or “remnants” in Arabic, a word that evokes memories, stories, and echoes of the past. From Galbi translates to “from my heart,” reflecting the emotional connection I have with my roots and the narratives I want to share. Galbi comes also from the rai music, a word that is often used in this specific music. The name symbolizes the beauty of preserving heritage while creating something new—pieces that carry a story, memories, and emotions within every thread. It represents my vision of blending nostalgia with modernity, where every design becomes a bridge between the past and the future.
٢. You studied and worked in different parts of the world. How did your experiences in Italy, the United States, and France shape your approach to fashion design?
Living and studying in Italy taught me the importance of craftsmanship and precision in design; Italy celebrates tailoring like no other place. In the United States, I learned about innovation and the freedom to push boundaries, merging creativity with strategy. France, with its rich fashion legacy, refined my appreciation for timeless elegance and storytelling through clothing. Each experience shaped a different facet of my brand, giving me a global perspective while grounding me in my heritage. This international exposure allows me to create collections that resonate with people from diverse cultures, bridging tradition with modern sensibility and also sharing my culture globally.
٣. Atlal from Galbi combines modern and traditional styles. How do you balance these two elements in your collections?
The balance between modern and traditional comes from my love for contrasts and storytelling. I use traditional elements like embroidery, tailoring, or fabrics inspired by Algerian heritage and reinterpret them with contemporary cuts, clean lines, and minimalism. It’s about respecting where I come from while evolving to meet today’s aesthetics and lifestyle. For example, I might take a silhouette inspired by traditional Algerian garments but simplify it to fit a modern wardrobe. This duality is at the heart of Atlal from Galbi—a timeless harmony between old and new.
٤. Atlal from Galbi uses a minimalistic yet artistic approach. How do you maintain that balance while still highlighting the rich culture behind the pieces?

I believe that simplicity can speak volumes when done thoughtfully. Minimalism doesn’t mean erasing culture; it means highlighting its essence. I focus on subtle details—like a button inspired by traditional jewellery or embroidery that whispers a story rather than shouts. These small elements carry cultural depth without overwhelming the design. It’s about finding the right balance between restraint and expression. By letting the craftsmanship and fabric tell the story, the designs remain clean, wearable, and timeless while honouring the richness of Algerian heritage.
٥. Could you talk a bit about the importance of handmade elements in your designs, especially in your couture edition?
Handmade elements are essential to Atlal from Galbi because they represent tradition, craftsmanship, and authenticity. In my couture pieces, I work with artisans who bring years of expertise, passing down techniques through generations. Handmade details, whether it’s embroidery, beadwork, or tailoring, make each piece unique, like a work of art. They embody care, patience, and cultural heritage. I see these elements as a way to preserve skills and stories that are at risk of being forgotten in today’s fast-paced world. It’s a tribute to craftsmanship and a celebration of slow, meaningful fashion.
٦. You often describe the brand as a way to connect people to heritage. What message do you hope people take away when they wear pieces from Atlal from Galbi?
When someone wears Atlal from Galbi, I hope they feel a sense of connection—not just to the garment but to a story, a culture, and ultimately, to themselves. I want people to experience pride in wearing something that carries meaning and history.
My pieces are not just clothes; they are reminders of home, identity, and belonging. Whether you’re connected to Algeria or simply moved by the story, my hope is that these designs create a bridge between cultures and spark curiosity. I want people to celebrate who they are, where they come from, and where they’re going.
Lately, I just launched my collaboration with the Japanese anime NARUTO, I aim to show that Arab culture is deeply connected to global narratives. Whether it’s the shared nostalgia of childhood or universal values of family and unity, these bridges remind us that stories—no matter where they originate—have the power to resonate worldwide.
