Tucked between the roots of North African heritage and the threads of contemporary design lies Holya Atelier, a Tunisian brand crafting hand-knotted rugs that speak ancestral memory to modern aesthetics. Holya is a home décor label and a living archive of Berber techniques, reimagined for a global audience.
At the heart of Holya is Amira Horchani, a Tunisian designer trained at France’s Arts et Métiers. With a background that fuses engineering and design, Horchani approaches textiles as both structure and story. She launched Holya Atelier to preserve the spirit of Berber craftsmanship while reimagining it for contemporary spaces. Her vision is grounded in deep respect for heritage, but also in the belief that tradition must evolve to remain alive.
Now with a growing international presence stretching from Tunis, to Paris, the U.S. and the Emirates, Holya remains firmly grounded in its core ethos: handmade, intentional, and deeply human.
KHAMSA5 explores through a Q&A the process, philosophy, and expansion behind the brand with its founder, who leads both the creative direction and the workshop operations.

١. Your rugs carry the essence of North African heritage. How do you balance preserving traditional Berber techniques with creating pieces that appeal to a modern, global clientele?
My work is deeply rooted in the rich traditions of North African craftsmanship, especially the ancestral techniques of Berber weaving.
I see myself as a bridge between generations, honoring the past while speaking to the present. Each rug is handmade using time-honored methods passed down through families, which ensures authenticity and soul in every piece.
At the same time, I reinterpret these traditions through a modern lens using contemporary color palettes, minimalist patterns, and refined finishes that resonate with a global, design-conscious audience. It’s not about compromising tradition, but rather evolving it with respect and purpose.

٢. After establishing your brand in Tunisia and Paris, you’re now expanding to the U.S. and the Emirates. What challenges and opportunities have come with this international growth?
Expanding to the U.S. and the Emirates has been both an exciting challenge and a powerful opportunity. Each market has its own cultural codes, aesthetic preferences, and ways of engaging with craftsmanship. The challenge lies in adapting without losing the essence of the brand. International expansion has required a strategic shift in how we position the brand. The U.S. and the Emirates are very different markets from Tunisia and France, in terms of consumer expectations, pricing structures, and even logistics. One of the key challenges has been adapting our storytelling and product presentation to fit each market’s sensibilities, while maintaining our identity rooted in artisanal Berber craftsmanship. On the other hand, the opportunities are significant. Both regions have a growing demand for high-end, handmade, and culturally rich home decor. This growth is allowing us to build stronger partnerships, scale production while preserving quality, and connect with a more diverse, design-savvy clientele. It’s a major step in evolving the brand into a globally recognized name.

٣. Holya Interiors is proudly artisanal. Can you walk us through the process behind a custom-made rug—from initial concept to the final knot?
At Holya Atelier, every custom-made rug begins with a conversation. We start by understanding the client’s vision, their space, their lifestyle, their aesthetic preferences. From there, I work on a design that reflects both their needs and our signature style, rooted in North African tradition with a modern sensibility. Once the design is finalized, we select natural materials, usually high-quality wool, and prepare the yarn through traditional hand-spinning and dyeing techniques using pigments or neutral tones.
The weaving process is entirely done by hand, knot by knot, by skilled artisans in our workshops. Depending on the size and complexity, a single rug can take several weeks to complete.
Throughout the process, we maintain close quality control and personal connection. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that carries the soul of the maker and the story of the client.

٤. You studied at the prestigious Arts et Métiers and now run your own weaving workshop. How has your design background shaped the way you approach textiles and entrepreneurship?
My education at Arts et Métiers gave me a strong foundation in design thinking, material understanding, and the importance of form meeting function. It taught me to approach textiles not just as decorative objects, but as a fusion of structure, purpose, and emotion.
That mindset has been essential in building Holya Atelier where every piece must be both beautiful and meaningful. From an entrepreneurial perspective, my design background helps me stay detail-oriented, solution-driven, and constantly curious. Whether I’m working on a new collection or managing the production side of the workshop, I’m always balancing creativity with strategy. Design is not just what we create, it’s how we run the business, how we communicate, and how we grow.

٥. What does “handknotted with love” mean to you personally, and how do you ensure this spirit is felt in every piece that leaves your atelier?

‘Hand knotted with love’ is more than a slogan, it’s a reflection of our philosophy. To me, it means that every rug carries the human touch, intention, and care of the person who made it. Our artisans are not just executing a technique; they’re passing on a cultural legacy, knot by knot.
I make it a priority to create an environment where that care and pride in the work can flourish, whether through fair working conditions, ongoing training, or simply valuing the hands behind the craft. We don’t rush the process. Every detail, from the choice of wool to the final trimming, is treated with respect. That’s how the spirit of love—for the craft, for beauty, for tradition—is woven into every piece that leaves our atelier.
