How Okhtein Turned Sisterhood into Global Glamour
From Cairo’s bustling artisan workshops to the gilded runways of Paris and the red carpets of Hollywood, Aya and Mounaz Abdel Raouf have built more than a brand—they’ve crafted a legacy. As the founders of Okhtein—Arabic for “sisters”—they’ve redefined what it means to blend heritage with high fashion. With their signature fusion of intricate craftsmanship and bold modernity, the duo has put Egyptian savoir-faire on the global fashion map.
KHAMSA sat down with the sisters to get personal about the designs that shaped their journey. And in their own words, the story unfolds in seven chapters.

Okhtein Reveals Their 7 Most Iconic Bags in the Ultimate Collector’s Edit
In April 2025, Okhtein unveiled its Ultimate Collector’s Edit, a curated lineup of the seven most iconic bags that have defined the brand’s rise from local atelier to luxury powerhouse. Each piece is a time capsule of artistry, culture, and sisterly vision, handpicked by Aya and Mounaz themselves.
“These are the bags that built our brand”, Mounaz tells us, “the ones that capture who we are and what Okhtein stands for.”
From pieces that sparked waitlists to those that made red carpet history, this edit is more than fashion—it’s a personal memoir in leather, brass, and soul.
If each of these seven bags represented a moment in your sisterhood, what memory or chapter would each one evoke for you?
١. Palmette Minaudière

This bag was launched 10 years ago exhibiting its lasting significance; it is inspired by Fatimid Dynasty architecture; a brass clutch turning historical design into carry-able art.
Palmette Minaudière is a symbol of our roots. This bag evokes our connection to heritage and craft—it reminds us of the first time we visited a local artisan’s workshop in Cairo and saw how skilled hands brought our designs to life.
٢. Bangle Clutch
Inspired by Ancient Egyptian jewellery; a cushioned leather clutch with a Palmette brass frame and bangle handle.
This one reminds us of our resilience, it took us two-three years to get this bag right, we were very stubborn on getting the bracelet handle done right and mixing it with a soft body was a challenge.
٣. Feryel Bag
Named after the founders’ grandmother, featuring leather, silver-tone or gold-tone hardware, and a classic fold-over top.
This bag is for our grandma, it’s named after her and it takes us back to her room sitting on her bed and hearing all her fashion adventures and stories. It reminds us of her elegance and her vintage charm.
٤. Mahogany
Reintroduces Okhtein’s iconic style with engraved brass sides, round handle, and detachable strap.
Takes us back to old Cairo, studying all the ancient doors of the mosques which sparked us to name this bag after the kind of wood that was used to create the beautiful sturdy doors of khan al Khalili.
٥. Malleable Clutch

Inspired by the theme of power within, the Malleable Clutch highlights the duality of strength and softness, with a unique, irregularly shaped brass handle and soft leather body.
This bag came during a time of personal transformation. Its soft, evolving structure mirrored how we were learning to let go of control and trust the process—both in business and in life.
٦. Felucca

Inspired by Pharaonic, Roman, and Mayan civilizations; its gold-plated brass and leather tell a story of guidance.
The Felucca holds a memory that’s deeply spiritual for us. It was inspired by the ancient Egyptian solar boat discovered beside the pyramids—designed with identical front and back ends, allowing it to sail in either direction. That symmetry, guided by the stars, moved us. It reminded us that in life—and in sisterhood—you don’t always need to know where you’re headed. Sometimes, you just need to trust the journey and let the universe guide you. That boat wasn’t just a vessel—it was a symbol of transition, purpose, and divine navigation. We wanted to capture that quiet strength in the Felucca bag.
٧. Mini Dome
Launched 10 years ago the bag is inspired by Islamic plant ornaments; a historically inspired bag reviving pottery inscriptions from Old Cairo’s domes.
One of our first designs, inspired by long walks through Old Cairo. The city’s domes felt like they stood the test of time—and we wanted to capture that same timelessness in a piece that still feels modern.

There have been moments when we saw things differently but we always let each other play around and try things out. You have to trust your partner and their vision to make it work.
The bags in this edit feel almost like modern heirlooms. Which one would you want your daughter or niece to carry one day?
Mounaz would choose the Palmette Minaudiere and I would choose the Feryel Bag. As a way to pass down the strong female representation of our matriarch, Foufa.
What’s one detail or design element in any of these bags that you feel most people overlook, but holds special meaning for you?
The Mahogany closure is often overlooked, it’s not just a simple closure. It was specifically crafted in Spain for us, designed to symbolize and at the same time work as the mechanism for opening and closing the bag. It even features intricate laser engraving on the smallest details.

For those who seek more than just beautiful things, Okhtein’s Ultimate Collector’s Edit offers pieces with soul—bags that carry stories, culture, and craft in every thread. These are not just accessories, but heirlooms in the making. From the intimate bond of sisterhood to a shared vision that traveled from Egypt to the world, this edit isn’t just about style—it’s about legacy. As Aya and Mounaz put it, this is their history in seven chapters. And for any collector with a love for design, depth, and purpose—this is where your story begins too!
