The best from the Arab side of the Met Gala.

The Met Gala is an event that is an internationally-acclaimed celebration of fashion. People and fashion icons from all walks of life and all around the world gather to honour the very best in the field. This diversity is part of the appeal of the festival, which brings together people on a global level.

Over the years, we at KHAMSA have seen many designers from our region make a statement at the Met Gala. Here are five Arab designers whose appearances we remember even today.

١. Zuhair Murad

Zuhair Murad has lit up multiple Met Gala looks with his designs. His choice of bold looks with flamboyant artistic flair in the way he orchestrates them makes everything with his branding a treat for the eyes and for the cameras.

One of our favourite Zuhair Murad looks at the Gala was when he styled model Jasmine Tookes in the now-legendary emerald gown in 2022. The dress was a draped masterpiece inspired by Gilded Glamour, and oozed the finest luxury and class. Coming with lace sequin gloves and a banger of a choker necklace, Tookes stunned everyone who caught a glimpse of the green.

A couple of years prior to the emerald fashion marvel, Zuhair Murad was at it again, this time for his 2016 collaboration with Hannah Davis. The Sports Illustrated model showed up at that year’s Met Gala in a flowery green dress that showcased the versatility of 3D elements in fashion. Aligning in sync with the Manus x Machina theme, the dress was a total masterclass in fusing modern approaches towards innovation with the traditions humans had to practice to get to the future. Davis looked absolutely incredible, and Zuhair Murad helped her craft an all-timer of a look.

٢. Georges Chakra

At the 2017 Met Gala, Katharine McPhee and Georges Chakra curated one of the most stunning looks of the event. The American singer came dressed to the nines in a pale blue gown, one that flowed like water and projected a silhouette that radiated elegance like nothing else there.

The dress was perfectly complemented with gold jewellery, symbolizing fashion’s love for the timeless and the evergreen. McPhee walked around looking incredibly graceful and pulled it off easily. The simplicity of the package made it one to remember for the world of Arab designers.

٣. Elie Saab

In 2019, Elie Saab and Camila Morrone combined to deliver a breathtaking pinkwash at the Met Gala. Wearing a baby pink dress, Morrone looked ethereal in her gown, which was perfectly aided in its aesthetic by matching gloves, silver bangles, and a fishnet headpiece. Saab has a reputation for timeless design, but this Met Gala masterclass five years ago remains one of the best looks the event has ever seen, one that will be remembered for many years to come.
