KHAMSA talked to Jude Benhalim about all things, well, Jude Benhalim.
١. How did Jude Benhalim come to life? Tell us your story.

“Having lived my entire life in Egypt, I grew up in an ideal environment for pursuing design. My mother was working in the fashion industry and my father was an architect. But, it was a school project that drew me into designing. As part of the IB program in high school, I had to complete a creative design project of my choice. Since jewellery was always a big interest of mine, I chose to make a debut collection of beaded jewellery and sold it at a trunk show for charity. The event was a big success and everyone was very encouraging of my work, in fact, they were very impressed that I was only 17. I found myself enjoying the design process, and it was very rewarding to see my sketches come to life. It was a big shift in my career plans, but that’s when I knew I should start my label. I founded the brand in 2011 with my partner and mother, Rana Al Azm, who has been the main force behind the success of our brand.”
٢. Jude Benhalim is committed to driving forward positive change in the jewellery industry. How does the brand go about achieving this objective?
“We are committed to creating jewellery that not only looks beautiful, but is also made responsibly. By using recycled silver, brass, and 18K gold in our collections, we minimize our environmental impact and promote a more sustainable, circular economy. Our pieces are handmade using locally sourced materials and techniques honed by skilled artisans. Moreover, we advocate mindful consumption by designing versatile, multi-wear jewellery that can adapt to different styles and trends.”

٣. Your team is of the opinion that art and sustainability can coexist in jewellery. What sustainable practices do you employ while manufacturing jewellery?
“Our sustainable approach is embedded in every stage of our production. We use recycled materials such as 925 silver, brass, and gold to ensure our creations have a reduced environmental footprint. Each piece is handcrafted in our Cairo workshop using traditional techniques that emphasize craftsmanship and attention to detail. We are also committed to reducing waste by reusing materials wherever possible and designing jewellery that is durable and timeless.”
٤. Please tell us how the brand is at the forefront of supporting and empowering Egyptian artists.
“Empowering local artisans is a core part of our mission. We collaborate with Egyptian craftsmen, particularly women breadwinners, to produce our jewellery using traditional methods. By providing these artisans with meaningful employment, we support the preservation of Egypt’s rich cultural heritage and contribute to the economic empowerment of local communities. This commitment ensures that each piece of jewellery carries with it the essence of authentic Egyptian artistry.”

٥. Jude Benhalim believes in the values of self-expression through handmade jewellery. What would you say are the pros and cons of committing to handcrafted jewellery?
“Handcrafted jewellery allows us to create truly unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that carry a personal touch. It enables us to focus on intricate details, superior quality, and authenticity, which is the essence of our brand. The downside, however, is that it can be labor-intensive and time-consuming, which may limit production capacity. But this exclusivity and the emotional connection handcrafted pieces foster with customers far outweigh the challenges.”
٦. Lastly, you are a brand founded by people with a passion for jewellery and jewellery design. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to launch their own jewellery brand?
“My advice is to stay true to your vision and values. Jewellery is an extension of your creativity, and it should reflect your unique identity. It’s also crucial to focus on sustainability and ethical practices—today’s consumers appreciate authenticity and responsibility. Finally, embrace learning and growing with your brand, be patient, and build meaningful relationships with artisans and customers alike.”
