Prada has laid the groundwork for many trends over time, and have been hailed for their revolutionary efforts in this regard. Which is why at the Milan Fashion Week this year, when their collection showcased an amalgamation of trends and blueprints galore, we knew they were doing what they have always done.
Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons joined hands to create their SS25 collection, shattering all norms and stereotypes in one shot. Revolutionary again? You bet.

Prada and Simons were focused on rewriting conventional fashion rules. Often in the back of our minds, we have an idea of what can go together and what doesn’t. Prada simply told us to forget them, bringing together the most random staples like chore coats and skirts of chrome. The House has always had a lovable eccentric side to it, and it was in full display inside the Deposito at Fondazione Prada, Milan.
The designers took liberty with what was “conservative” and what was “modern”. For example, there were floral prints that were decorated very subtly, which was a refreshing change of pace. There were also metallic dresses, but unlike the standard practice of the metal dominating the fit, it was carved with holes to showcase the human figure. The chemist in Prada continued to bubble up new concoctions like black leather/bright pink nylon, which was a fine sight to behold. Our favorite one was the Carrie Bradshaw detached belt skirt appearing as one of the looks, that looked sensational.
Prada and Simons didn’t hold back on footwear, either. In contrast to the outlandish approach for the wider collection, they opted for nostalgia with footwear. Resurrecting many iconic styles from their archives was a stroke of genius that was well-received by viewers and critics. When the footwear combined with the clothes, looks that, well, looked like they’d shatter the time-space continuum was born. And to that, we say a resounding yes.
There was some discussion on the collection’s overall theme lacking a bit of fine-tuning, that it was more chaotic than ordered. We think that’s exactly what Prada and Simons were going for. Today’s fashion practices are so fast-paced, with even the strongest trends barely getting time to breathe and existing categories being dissected into further divisions and even more subdivisions. This kind of approach, where one doesn’t quite know the order anymore, is a stellar take on things and one that could even become the norm a few years later.

Indeed, there is a bit of irony in Prada rewriting the rules only to potentially create a new one – of there being no rules. Nevertheless, we love the genius behind them, redefining the existing set of rules and norms for something much more out there.

Final Note

Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons were a dynamic duo in Milan, offering us something that rewired our fashion algorithm. Not only did they tap into the unknown, but they did it by looking into many of Prada’s past eras and coming up with futuristic and unconventional variants of them.
What we derived from the Prada SS25 Collection was that unpredictability and difference when done right are much more exciting and thought-provoking than the norm. These two traits are also very human, and Prada wanted to highlight that bit and make the collection resonate with viewers, as radical as it was.
Using the power of creativity as a means to transform the ordinary into something unique and extraordinary was the objective, and it’s safe to say they pulled it off in style.
