New country, who this?

Relocating to a new country is often seen as a grand adventure, full of growth, discovery, and new opportunities. However, stepping into the unknown can also be daunting. To learn more about such challenges, KHAMSA talks to Dr. Bisi Laniyan, clinical psychologist and adult specialist at Sage Clinics, Dubai.

No Set Time to Settle: Letting Go of Pressure

A common misconception about moving to a new country is the belief that there’s a set timeline to ‘settle in‘ or ‘find your feet.‘ In reality, everyone’s journey is unique, and there is no right or wrong way to adjust. Letting go of rigid expectations can help ease the pressure.

It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed and experience a range of emotions, such as excitement, fear, hope, and anxiety. These feelings might lead you to reflect deeply on whether moving was the best decision. Rather than focusing on what you’ve left behind or feeling unsettled, try to embrace your new surroundings with an open heart. When settling in, it’s important to allow yourself the grace and patience to adjust at your own pace.

In my experience as a psychologist, I’ve seen many people struggle with the disorientation that comes with cultural differences. Sometimes, there is resistance to embracing the new and the uncertainty it brings. However, when we remain open-minded, we invite compassion into our lives, which helps us appreciate the beauty of our new environment and the opportunities it presents.

Reinventing Yourself: The Gift of a Fresh Start

Amid all the change, there is a chance to redefine who you are and who you want to become. Away from the expectations and histories of your homeland, you have the freedom to explore new facets of your identity and pursue new passions. Permit yourself to let go of limiting beliefs, build new connections, and create a life that aligns with your true desires. Experiment with new habits, hobbies, and perspectives. This is a time for personal growth and self-discovery—an opportunity to shape a version of yourself that feels authentic and fulfilling.

Ask yourself: What new qualities do I hope to cultivate in this new chapter of my life? How can I stay true to myself while embracing the new experiences and opportunities that come my way?

Embracing Uncertainty: Finding Strength in the Unknown

Travel + Leisure

By moving to a new country, you are already showing the ability to be flexible and adapt to change. Relocating requires courage and a willingness to embrace the unknown. When you approach this journey with curiosity and a sense of adventure, you can turn challenges into opportunities for growth. Embracing uncertainty opens you up to endless possibilities and the potential for incredible personal growth.

Building New Connections: Finding Your Community

Starting over in a place that feels completely different from what you’re used to can mean building a new support network from scratch. Back home, you might have had a close-knit circle of family and friends who offered comfort and advice. In a new place, the lack of familiar faces can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation.

But there’s also an opportunity here. Building new connections requires stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the unfamiliar. It’s a chance to meet people from different backgrounds, learn from their experiences, and expand your own worldview. While you’re making new connections, don’t forget to nurture your existing long-distance relationships. These bonds can provide a sense of continuity and support as you navigate your new environment.

Remember, this is your chance to see the world through fresh eyes, to broaden your horizons, and to deepen your understanding of others. Additionally, forming meaningful relationships takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself.

When you feel disconnected or alone, ask yourself: What self-care strategies have worked for me in the past, and how can I adapt them to fit my new life? What existing relationships can I lean on at this moment for support?
