Tucked between the Black Sea and the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains, Sochi is a city of quiet contrasts and deep-rooted beauty. Palm-lined promenades give way to alpine forests, where the air feels cooler and time moves slower. It’s a city that invites you to soften, to breathe, and to return to yourself. The perfect winter destination for the endless adventurer.
This week, KHAMSA is taking you on this adventure with Reema Taher (@reematahr on Instagram). This Dubai-born Russian Sudanese creative; model, content creator, and project manager, moves through the world with a layered perspective shaped by culture, movement, and storytelling.
Raised in Dubai but deeply connected to Sochi, her mother’s hometown, she feels a constant pull back to the city’s landscapes and familial roots. For Reema, Sochi is more than a destination; it’s where the beach meets the mountains, where food feels like home, and the city offers a sense of comfort and balance.
Her approach to travel is intuitive and emotional, guided by places that hold memory, nature, and a sense of belonging.

Underrated places?
Agura Waterfalls – Krasnodar Krai

One of my favorite nature escapes near Sochi. I usually recommend it to anyone who wants a break from the city.
Rosa Khutor Alpine Village – Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort, Esto-Sadok, Krasnaya Polyana

The alpine village, cable cars, and mountain views make it worth visiting year-round — whether for skiing in winter or hiking and sightseeing in summer.
What should you avoid?
- Wearing heels to walk around because most streets are cobblestone.
- Not packing at least one jacket – even summer nights can feel cold, especially if you’re a Dubai kid.
- Tourist traps around Sochi Port – The yacht tours there are heavily overpriced for what you get, and the stores along the marina tend to be expensive without offering much value.
Must-pack items?

- A warm jacket or coat, even in warmer months
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Heavy thermal base layers if visiting in winter
- Sunscreen (Sochi is sunny year-round)
- Swimsuit — beaches, spas, and hotel pools are everywhere
Any tips and tricks to tackle the city?
- Download the Yandex Go app if you need to book a cab.
- While many people speak English, I keep a translator app handy just in case.
- Most of Sochi city is walkable so I prefer exploring on foot rather than relying on taxis.
