The Sahel is a region in North-Central Africa, stretching across several countries of the Sahara Desert. Known for its diverse landscapes, Sahel features savannas, grasslands, and a unique wildlife. This area is rich in culture, and home to vibrant communities that celebrate traditions through music, dance, and colorful markets. Sahel is also a place of adventure, where visitors can explore ancient cities like Timbuktu and enjoy stunning views of the desert and lush oases. It’s a blend of natural beauty and rich heritage, making it an exciting destination for travellers!

This week, KHAMSA ventures into Sahel with the help of Jude Salem‘s travel guide. Jude (@judesalem) is the talented PR Manager for Valentino Middle East and a fashion and travel enthusiast.

Top must-visit food spots in Sahel?

When I go to Sahel, I am what you call an “Almaza” person. My favourite place to spend my summer is really no other place than Almaza Bay. It has all the right elements to create the perfect summer memories. The food is incredible, and you have many options!

Pier 88

THE BEST Italian food. We always go for the pasta (the old Giovanni pasta, no longer on the menu is a favourite, and the carbonara is delicious as well). I also highly recommend Pier 88 for breakfast.

SACHI

More recently opened, SACHI has become a favourite spot for food and drinks. The halloumi sandwich, the sushi, rigatoni alla norma, and the beef and salmon tataki are a must-try!

White & Blue

If in Sahel, especially Almaza, you can not leave without having a proper fish meal at White & Blue. You absolutely must order a fish of your choice (I always go for a white fish cooked “butterfly”, with the iconic Egyptian brown rice and tahini). Trust me, order all the seafood on the menu, get your rice and pasta on the side, and enjoy not only the delicious food but the beautiful sunset.

Babbo’s Taverna

Another seafood must-have. Located in Sidi Heneish, one of my favourite ‘hidden gems’ in the Sahel. Get the seafood platter, and thank me later!

Em Sherif

Newly opened in Almaza, this classic never goes wrong.

Ratios Bakery

Almost every morning without fail, half asleep, I walk to Ratios bakery in the village of Almaza Bay. They bake everything fresh that morning, I usually end up with a cinnamon roll, or their twisted olive bread.

Best places for sundowners/rooftop hangouts?

Sidi Heneish

My favourite place to watch the sunset is at Sidi Heneish, It is another area nearby, where there are trees on the beach, the water is out of this world, and the sunset is breathtaking each time I get to experience it there.

Almaza Bay

I have to say the sunset from the Bay in Almaza is truly something out of this world. You need to walk down to the Bay and climb up the hill slightly and watch one of the most beautiful sunsets.”

Best places for shopping?

“The village in Almaza Bay is one of a kind, and it’s full of local and homegrown Egyptian brands. My favorite is Pop-Up shop! You can find everything from home décor to unique clothes, to amazing accessories. It’s really a one-stop shop.”

Best boutique hotels to stay in?

“There are many hotel options in Almaza, and I heard there is a new one opening next year that is focused on spas and wellness, so I will definitely be checking that out. In Sahel, I always would recommend Casa Cook in Hacienda White, when it comes to hotels, Casa Cook gets the vibe right every time. When we go, we like to stay with friends who have homes there (as the houses in Almaza are truly next level, this summer I wanted to do a series discovering the homes of Almaza Bay because they are truly incredible). You also have rental options for apartments and houses – that would be my advice for anyone planning to visit.”

What should you avoid?

While the North Coast has so much to offer, I would say avoid moving around to much. Do your research on which area you would like to go to and really make the most of it! Almaza has become the only destination where I can really switch off and relax as I really immerse myself into the environment and nature around. Avoid being on your phone too much as you might miss the most gorgeous sunsets you have ever seen (it’s hard though as I’m constantly snapping photos of everything around me)

Must pack items?

“Comfort really is key in the Sahel”

  • SUNSCREEN! 50 SPF – every day, non-negotiable! You will leave Sahel with the most beautiful tan, but please make sure you don’t forget the sunscreen.
  • If you open my suitcase before going to Almaza, it’s full of swimsuits, beach wraps, and beachwear. The concept is beachwear that can be worn from day to night, so I would get some really great beach outfits that can be elevated slightly for the evening and you are good to go!
  • Comfortable footwear – I personally wouldn’t bother bringing any high heels, I spend most of my time in flat shoes and honestly, I’m barefoot a lot of the time.

Any tips and tricks to tackle the city?

“My advice is Almaza Bay is best enjoyed with friends and loved ones! Go as a group, rent a place for the summer, and really immerse yourself in it. Do your research as there are many compounds – Almaza Bay, Hacienda, Marassi etc. Find the place that calls to you most, organize logistics to get there, and then try to avoid moving around too much as I feel once you get into the Sahel routine, your mind really gets to switch off. Keep in mind, there is something for everyone! Whether you want to party until the early hours of the morning, or if you want to sleep well and work out in the morning, Sahel has got it all!”
