Travel Guide: San Diego By Joelle Kubursi

Sun-drenched and sea-breezy, San Diego in the summer is California at its most effortlessly cool. From beach bonfires in La Jolla to lazy afternoons in Balboa Park, the city blends laid-back surf culture with just the right dose of glam. Whether you’re chasing fish tacos, sunset hikes, or rooftop DJ sets, San Diego is where summer stretches out and never really says goodbye.

Top must-visit food spots?

Valentina – Encinitas (Coast Highway 101) (@restaurant.valentina)

An intimate Spanish/Mediterranean bistro offering a thoughtfully curated seasonal menu. The restaurant itself is smaller, which makes it a more personal dining experience. My personal favorites are the mussels, schnitzel, and sashimi, each one executed beautifully.

Rare Society – Del Mar (@raresocietysteakhouse)

This steakhouse is my go-to for celebrations. The steak board, featuring an assembly of prime cuts, is mouthwateringly delicious, accompanied by indulgent side dishes like the Parker House rolls, truffled creamed spinach, and whipped potatoes.

Javier’s – La Jolla (UTC) (@javierscantina)

A bit of a classic, you either love it or you don’t. I’m a huge fan of this restaurant, from the moody ambiance to the outstanding service to the delicious cuisine. The skirt steak tacos on flour tortillas are my meal of choice time and time again, served with rice and beans that complement the dish. I also recommend the pork chop, enchiladas, and for starters: the ceviche, guacamole, and chicken taquitos.

Juice Stop – Encinitas (@juicestopsd)

Tucked away in a small plaza, this juice bar is a hidden gem. The owner is incredibly kind and creative. She often creates custom smoothies and juices based on the flavors I’m craving. I love asking her to surprise me, and she always stirs something up that exceeds my expectations.

Pipes Café – Cardiff-by-the-Sea (@pipescafe_cardiff)

A beloved breakfast spot with generous portions and a beach view. I enjoy the Big Breakfast, which includes pancakes or French toast, eggs, house potatoes, toast and jam, and bacon or sausage. Affordable, filling, and locally loved.

Cali Cream – Encinitas (@calicreamencinitas)

A spot that both tourists and locals adore. Cali Cream has a vast variety of flavors. My #1 is Graham Central Station, which reminds me of Eggo waffles with Aunt Jemima syrup, but no one agrees with my comparison.

Best places for sundowners/roof-top places?

I honestly can’t choose the best location for sunset, the best part of San Diego is that no matter what beach you stumble onto, you’re guaranteed a breathtaking view. A few of my favorites:

Swami’s Beach – Encinitas

Del Mar Beach – Oceanside

D Street – Encinitas

La Jolla Cove Beach

Best places for shopping?

Westfield UTC – La Jolla (@westfieldutc)

Fashion Valley – Mission Valley

Best boutique hotels to stay in?

Alila Marea Beach Resort – Carlsbad (@alilamareabeachresort)

Fairmont Grand Del Mar – Del Mar

Omni Resort – La Costa

La Valencia Hotel – La Jolla

Underrated Places

The Tamarack area in Carlsbad, in my opinion, has the most stunning sunset views. The Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market on Sundays has fresh produce, beautiful flowers and plants, and diverse food options, makes for a beautiful Sunday brunch.

The Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market

What should you avoid?

The traffic on the 5 during rush hour.

Must-pack items?

Sunglasses, sandals/flip-flops, bathing suits and coverups, a shawl, sweater, or light jumper for the evenings.

Any tips & tricks to tackle the city?

Spend a day in each city to feel well introduced to the beauty San Diego has to offer.

For example:

• Day one in La Jolla

• Day two in Solana Beach

• Day three in Cardiff
